The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expressed shock at the death of President John Evans Atta Mills.
President Mills passed away last Tuesday at the 37 Military Hospital, after taking ill.
CAF President, Issa Hayatou in a statement copied to GNA Sports described the late President Mills as an astute sportsman while acknowledging his influence in the development of Ghana sports.
“It is with sadness that we have learnt of the untimely death of President Mills. CAF is saddened by the news and on behalf of the African football family; I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved family, Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the people of Ghana.
“President Mills has made a significant contribution to the shine of Ghana and African football by extending the commitment of those who preceded him as head of the nation since Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1957.
My thoughts and prayers are with all Ghanaians during this difficult period,” said Hayatou.
The late President Mills had served in various capacities at Accra Hearts of Oak FC, the National Sports Council and the Ghana Olympic Committee, amongst others.**
